Salt Lake City – Volunteer Planning Intern

This position is designed to provide students with professional experience in furthering their education and training in the Urban Planning field and is academically oriented for the student’s benefit. Students must be currently enrolled in a college or university studying urban planning or a closely related field and will be required to volunteer a minimum of three days (Mon-Fri) per week for a minimum time period of one semester.

FACILITIES PLANNING INTERN – August 2009
One Part-time Position: 19 hrs/wk maximum
Hourly rate to be determined per experience/qualifications

The Planning Intern Position:
For the graduate level candidate, the internship term is open-ended. For all candidates the maximum number of hours per week is nineteen (19). Facilities Planning will review and consider the intern program requirements from any College.

Position Description:
The Facilities Planning (FP) Department is seeking an intern to assist FP staff with planning research and document preparation. The intern will help staff compile the information necessary to identify historic resources, densities (including FAR), building heights, and other characteristics within the various neighborhood precincts of the University of Utah.
Under general supervision, the Planning Intern may perform responsible fieldwork, including architectural photography and completion of field forms. May conduct primary research on campus for inclusion in planning studies. He/She will work under FP staff and report directly to the office of the Associate Vice President for Facilities Management. Possible assignments may include: maintenance of ArcGIS (Geographic Information Systems)-formatted database of historical and architectural site information; on-going maintenance of architectural documentation; review grant proposals; review and edit drafts of consultant-prepared architectural documents; and participate in the creation of guidelines for architectural evaluation procedures and documentation for Facilities Management staff and/or architectural consultants.

Required:
Basic level of knowledge, interest, and capabilities in architectural history and urban planning; ability to think and communicate (verbal & written) clearly; and ability to interact effectively with professional staff and the public. Basic understanding of MS Office, GIS, and Adobe Photoshop.

Strongly Preferred:
Experience and competency in Autocad. Experience participating in historic resources surveys. Ability to read and review a variety of types of architectural documents.

Minimum Qualifications:
Training and Experience: Requires completion of at least two years of a four-year college or university baccalaureate degree program with a major or minor concentration in City, Regional or Urban planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies. Note: Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview.
